Yelp Elite Event At The Stirling Room Thanks To @YelpToronto
Last night I was invited by Vivek, the man behind the Twitter handle @YelpToronto and an all around amazing individual, to come out to a Yelp Elite Event. If you don’t know what Yelp is, it is “an online urban city guide that helps people find cool places to eat, shop, drink, relax and play, based on the informed opinions of a vibrant and active community of locals in the know. Yelp is the fun and easy way to find, review and talk about what’s great — and not so great — in your world.” Yelp holds these Elite Events every now and again for their Elite Squad you can check this link here to find out what the Yelp Elite Squad is all about and how to gain membership.
Last night’s event was held at The Stirling Room in Toronto’s Distillery District. I invited my friends Brock (@BrockMcLaughlin) and Courtney (@CourtSweet) to join in on the evenings festivities and together we set out to meet some Elite Yelpers! It turned out when we got there that another well know member of the Toronto Twitter Community, Rannie Turingan (@PhotoJunkie) was hired to do some portrait photography and he took some great pictures of us and everyone else there. All the photos that Rannie took at the event are available on his website here. Check out photos Rannie took of us at the top of this post.
As you may have guessed from the above picture, Yelp really does it up right for their Elite Squads! Not only did the event take place in one of Toronto’s hottest and newest locations (we decided we definitely need to go back there SOON) but it was an open bar event! I learned that my father’s waitering skills from when he was a teenager actually were passed down to me as I managed to traverse the bar holding 3 of those special grapefruit mixed drinks AND 2 beers all at once, and was given much applause by some random Elite Yelpers when I made it to our little area. Ya, everyone is really, really nice it seems in this smaller social media community of Toronto which I had never really been involved in much before. I will be honest though, what is stopping m from using Yelp more, even today, is that their BlackBerry app does not allow for adding reviews unlike their app on other smartphone platforms. Nonetheless it is a great way to find out information about cool stuff going on in your city – or if you’re in a strange city. Yelp also had really cool swag all over the place, it was fun to watch all the people forage about hoping to find some really cool knickknack or another. I ended up with a Yelp bottle opener keychain, a yelp wrist sweatband (wristband?) and some Yelp mints in the shape of the Yelp logo in a Yelp branded tin.
All in all, it was a superb evening. I am so happy to have been involved in it and that I got to bring good friends along made it even better. If you are already using Yelp find me at http://DanLevy.Yelp.ca and if you don’t use Yelp now is as good a time to start! Maybe you too can be at the next Elite Squad Event in your city! You won’t regret it I promise!
